The paths changed, and indeed the gui complains that it can't find files, but overall the 'import' procedure worked nicely and I can go on with the work on the same project.

Did the file paths change, or are they identical to the old system?
If the latter, then all you need to do is copy the directory ~/.phenix
from the laptop to the iMac, and it should be happy.  If you did move
directories around, you need to import the project directories into a
new database.  To do this, select "Import project" from the "File"
menu, and pick a project directory - do this for each one.  It will
rewrite *some* paths to reflect the move, but is a little inconsistent
at the moment - this will be addressed very soon (along with moving
project directories on the same computer).  I would recommend
upgrading to the newest nightly build, since I've forgotten when
exactly some of these features were added.
