Hi Mischa, at present we can do this: http://phenix-online.org/presentations/fem_SEP2013.pdf which is along the same lines, I guess (unsharp mask is also a part of FEM procedure, but it is not mentioned in above slides). I'm a bit fuzzy on that subject, and so I said 'potentially silly', because it could be that such approaches are totally common but have different names (such as local averaging/scaling and so on).
