Hi I've just installed the Linux 64-bit version 1.4-105 on a CentOS5 machine, and I get a lot of errors in starting up the GUI. What am I missing? Also is it possible to install both the 32-bit & 64-bit versions together: I know it works for the executables in build/intel- linux-2.6 build/intel-linux-2.6-x86_64, but does that mess up the gui? It's OK on the command line Phil
Hi Phil, I can try and answer... The "old" phenix gui, started up with "phenix" does give some error message on starting and running, but it should run ok. The "new" phenix gui, started up with "phenix2" or commands like "phenix.refine --gui", should not give significant error messages on starting up. I would think that by sourcing the "phenix_env" for one version or another you should be able to have any number of phenix versions installed and they should not interfere in any way... Yes phenix2 works & doesn't give any error messages Just checking - it doesn't seem to be a RTFM ! :-) thanks a lot Phil On 1 Jul 2009, at 15:43, Thomas C. Terwilliger wrote:

Hi Phil, Oh good. I should mention that the "new" gui and associated methods are still in the development stage, so there are things that don't work yet. Nat Echols, who is making the really nice new gui, may want to comment on that. The command-line versions "phenix.refine model.pdb data.mtz" or "phenix.refine params.eff" are always there for you to use in case of any problems. Note that the new gui writes out the parameters files (refine.eff, autosol.eff etc) so you can edit those and continue on from command line if you like. All the best, Tom T

The GUI in 1.4-105 should be relatively stable. There are some tests for this now: /bin/sh $PHENIX/phenix_regression/gui/gui_tests.sh This currently runs the phenix.refine and xtriage GUIs, and two validation programs (they will all be started and stopped automatically). The entire script takes about a minute. This isn't comprehensive but it will catch any bugs that disable these programs completely. Unfortunately, we can't run this completely unattended yet, but I will try to run it every day before I leave. -Nat ------------------- Nathaniel Echols Lawrence Berkeley Lab 510-486-5136 [email protected]
I have a problem which was communicated some time ago, but I do not know if it was solved I ssh -X (or -Y) from one Mac to another Mac and trying to activate any of phenix gui's I get: [xray5:phenix.app/Contents/Resources] felixfrolow% phenix2 This program needs access to the screen. Please run with 'pythonw', not 'python', and only when you are logged in on the main display of your Mac. it seems that not very many people have such problem as web is almost empty when is searched for solution Dr Felix Frolow Professor of Structural Biology and Biotechnology Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology Tel Aviv University 69978, Israel Acta Crystallographica D, co-editor e-mail: [email protected] Tel: ++972 3640 8723 Fax: ++972 3640 9407 Cellular: ++972 547 459 608 On Jul 1, 2009, at 5:43 PM, Thomas C. This only works with programs written for X-windows - but the Mac versions of the Phenix GUIs use wxPython, which wraps native controls, specifically, the Carbon API, which unlike X11 doesn't support redirecting display over the network. You need to use a program like Remote Desktop or VNC to run native Mac apps over the network. In general, I haven't tested running the GUI over the network very heavily; I find it difficult to use this way (even on a very fast network like we have here), especially since 3D graphics are near- useless. I would like for the GUI to be able to run processes remotely, but this is probably not going to happen before the next official release. -Nat ------------------- Nathaniel Echols Lawrence Berkeley Lab 510-486-5136 [email protected]
